Changing the block is out the question as it is a company wide standard, is there anything I can do to stop AutoCAD from freezing and hanging? It happens in most drawings, doesn't matter if I am in 2018 or 2016 and happens near enough every time I try to move, pan or zoom with a selection made after so much has been added to a drawing.ĭrawings are usually between 2-4Mb so isn't much data within the drawing in a sense, but with regards to the block I mentioned, this data in the block is repeated hundreds/thousands of times dependant on the drawing in question. The block in particular there can be hundreds if thousands on one drawing as it is one we use constantly. We are using blocks with attributes on with different visibility's and the hang happens worse on these blocks. Whenever panning, zooming or trying to move an object in AutoCAD, it tends to hang, freezing for several seconds before it starts to cooperate again. By doing so AutoCAD only carry over the needed layers no layer state is carried over.Ĭheck the scale in Paper Space Check and adjust the scale of pasted objects in paper space (see Using the Clipboard pastes objects in the wrong size in AutoCAD).First off, this happens with whatever version of AutoCAD I use, I have 20 and the same thing happens in both, so my initial guess is AutoCAD is hammering my video card.

This happens after every edit operation, such as copy-paste. When typing LAYERSTATE on the command line, it takes sometimes for the dialog box to come up a list all the layer states. The AutoCAD UI (Ribbon) updates this internal layer state list after every drawing modification.

Remove temporary files Delete the contents of the temp folders (see How to delete temporary files in Windows).Ĭheck the Layer States AutoCAD merges the layer-states of all the xrefs involved into one list. A new definition of the block might change the behavior in case the block definition is needed. This can refresh the memory usage on the system.Įxplode blocks before copying When the issue appears when copying a block, the block might be corrupt. Reopen the drawing Save, close, and reopen the drawing. Reset the Windows clipboard Memory fragmentation may have corrupted the clipboard.

Install object enablers for drawings created with applications such as Civil 3D. Install object enablers that may be required to prevent proxy graphics The object enablers plugin allow for the objects to display instead of being proxy graphics.

Often these are not visible in the drawing and can be turned on under the Parametric tab on the ribbon. Too many constraints will slow down a drawing and stop copy and paste from working.

Use the PURGE command and select all options to purge extra Line Types that may be in the drawing. Use the RECOVER command to open the drawing. This will also help reduce the overall file size and improve performance. Group objects together into blocks wherever appropriate. This will reduce the amount of system resources needed to move around within the drawing editor. If there are many layers in a drawing, lock and/or freeze those which are not always necessary to have their content visible. Repair the drawing: After updating, repair the drawing using the following methods
